eReaders

If you are writing a book, plan to hire a ghostwriter, or self-publishing ebooks, then eReaders are a great way to deliver and receive books in a matter of seconds.

Here’s quick guide to the four most popular choices on the market.

Kindle

Introduced at the end of 2007, Amazon's Kindle is responsible for sparking the current popularity of eReaders and ebooks. Kindle is the top-selling eReader, providing easy access to more than 750,000 ebooks. The Kindle also uses e-ink, which makes it easy to read outdoors or in any other lighting condition.

The main downside to the Kindle is that its black-and-white e-ink display makes it a plainer option than some of its flashy competitors. Kindle currently comes in three models, with the least expensive one available for $139. Another model at $189 includes free 3G wireless access.

Nook

The Nook is Barnes & Noble's response to Amazon's Kindle. The Nook is available in two price points: $149 and $249.

The version that starts at $149 has two screens: black-and-white or color. The large eReader screen features black-and-white e-ink, while the smaller color screen provides space to enjoy color web browsing.

The Nook that starts at $249 offers full color. This version features a full-color seven-inch screen for reading, web browsing and playing games. The downside to the full-color Nook is that the battery only lasts for eight hours.

iPad

Apple’s iPad is giving the Kindle and Nook a run for its money.

In addition to being an eReader, the iPad provides full web browsing, email and gaming - all controlled by the iPad's touchscreen. One reason for its popularity is that it is the first eReader to provide a fully functional computing experience on a touchscreen tablet.

On the downside, the iPad isn't cheap. The three wireless-only devices cost between $499 and $699. The three devices that include 3G cost between $629 and $829. In contrast to Amazon’s free access, iPad’s 3G connection requires and additional monthly service from AT&T.

Reader Touch Edition

Sony's Reader Touch Edition is a blend of Amazon's Kindle and B&N's Nook.

Like the Kindle, the Reader Touch Edition only uses e-ink on its six-inch screen. This means that this device can still be used to read in the direct sunlight. It also means that it provides up to two full weeks of reading on a single charge. Like the Nook, this eReader features a touchscreen.

The big downside is that the Sony Reader Touch Edition is the only eReader on this list that doesn't feature wireless connectivity.

The price is also in between. It sells for $229, in black or red.
